Smart have released preview images of their new fully electric SUV ahead of its official unveiling at the Munich Motor Show in September and expected release in 2023.

The SUV will be a departure from the small hatchbacks that Smart are known for, with the five-seater expected to be the largest model the company has made to date. It’s expected to be around the size of a Mini Countryman meaning there will be enough room for five adults to fit comfortably and an ideal choice for young families.

It will also be the first new model produced since Smart became part of a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, one of China’s top manufacturers.

In the above sketch and below exterior renderings you can see the outline design of the new model with sharp headlights, wide wheels and prominent roof bars which really give it a rugged SUV look yet still maintaining a recognisably Smart styling, in more than just the logo’s appearance.

It’s expected to be based in part on Geely’s flexible Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) architecture but will be fully designed by Smart’s own team with a premium look and feel throughout.

Though we’ve not yet got a glimpse of the inside we expect several luxury touches like voice control and the latest smartphone connectivity but will have to wait until September to find out more about this as well as the interior design.

The brand has the aim of achieving a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and so you can also expect to see a range of driver assistance features like auto emergency breaking included.

We’ll keep you updated as we get more updates in the coming months.
