Ford has announced the end of an era with their decision to phase the Ford Mondeo out of production over the next year.

The Mondeo was launched in the UK nearly thirty years ago in 1993 and since then has sold five million models to date with it being equally as popular with families and executives looking for a spacious and comfortable vehicle, as it’s available in several body shapes, including the family favourite hatchback as well as saloon and estate versions.

The announcement came on the heels of Ford re-evaluating their business model to ensure they keep up with the wider changes in the automotive industry.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen the rise of the SUV across the world but especially on UK roads. SUVs have become synonymous in our minds with a family car, in the way a large hatchback like the Mondeo once was and this shift in what consumers are looking for is one of the reasons that the model is being phased out.

Across the globe, and especially in the UK with the ban on the sale of new petrol, diesel, and hybrid vehicles from 2030, the motor industry is electrifying. All brands now have hybrid or fully electric vehicles in their line up with many more on the way and purely petrol and diesel engines being phased out. Ford, like most other manufacturers, is expanding its electric range and has committed to offering an electrified version of every passenger car available in the European market by the end of 2021.

The company have also said that by 2026 every model available in Europe will be a hybrid or EV and by 2030 all models will be fully electric.

Vice-President of Manufacturing at Ford of Europe, Kieran Cahill said: “Today is another step on Ford’s electrification journey, providing a bridge to an all-electric passenger vehicle future.”

Production of the Mondeo will stop at Ford’s Valencia plant in roughly a year, with Ford saying it will cease production in early 2022.

The Mondeo is a favourite of Car Lease Special Offers, and our most enthusiastic Mondeo fan Leasing Consultant Daniel Johnson said: “Though it’s gone the Mondeo will never be forgotten.”

Daniel’s sentiment is one felt across the industry, with the Mondeo Man a figure who will live on beyond production of the last model.

The Mondeo Man was a phrase used by Tony Blair at the October 1996 Labour Party and was used to describe a centrist, no-nonsense, hard-working individual that Blair hoped his vision for the new Labour party would capture the vote of. The imagery of the Mondeo man has lasted over time, and become a phrase used to describe a reliable and dependant individual who works hard.
