Easily recognisable thanks to their small, boxy design Smart cars are one of the best-known microcars on the market.

The idea for this compact city car came from the maker of Swatch watches SMH’s CEO Nicolas Hayeks. He saw a gap in the market and SMH partnered with Mercedes-Benz to create the Smart car, and in 1998 the very first Fortwo was launched. With its low emissions, cheap running costs and ease of parking the Fortwo quickly became one of the most popular city cars on the market.

Since then Smart has expanded its range with four-seater Forfour models and electric versions of all models.

Most of their electric models have a 70-mile range, which might not seem like a lot when compared with other cars on the market but is plenty for city living, and with charging in around 40 minutes they quickly charge while you’re out and about.

The Smart Control app allows you to monitor your remaining mileage range, get tips on how to drive more efficiently, and utilising features like their pre-entry climate control or setting your car to charge at specific times.

If you’re looking for a compact city car that feels roomy on the inside then a Smart car could be right for you. Although small on the outside, Smart cars are designed to be as spacious as possible on the inside, with some options including luggage storage accessories and special storage compartments.
