7 of the best electric and hybrid estate cars

Perhaps not as popular as electric SUVs, tourers do seem nevertheless to be making a bit of a splash in 2025; popular with drivers searching for a more accessible, practical boot than an SUV can provide.

Electric or hybrid power combined with arguably the most practical layout of any vehicle in existence makes something of a compelling combination, we think you'll agree. Which leads us to compiling what we think are 7 of the best electric and hybrid estate cars in 2025, in no particular order (but covering a range of budgets)...

1. Audi A6 e-Tron Avant

If it’s a combination of practicality and premium build and looks that you’re after then this Audi should strike the perfect balance. Built on the VW PPE platform, 3 powertrains are available, with up to 456bhp of power. Boasting a range of up to 437 miles, the A6 e-tron Avant offers a reasonably-sized 502-litre boot which extends when you put the seats down to 1422 litres. A 25-litre luggage area under its bonnet provides a bit more capacity and a place to house charging cables. Ultra rapid 270kW charging will get you from 10–80% capacity in just 21 minutes. The high tech cabin features a 14.5-inch touchscreen and an advanced HUD.

2. BMW i5 Tourer

This estate comes in 2 variants. Both models use an 81.2kWh battery; the eDrive40 has a single rear-mounted motor producing 335bhp, while the M60 xDrive features dual motors delivering 593bhp. Providing a very useful range of up to 344 miles (WLTP), the spacious boot has a capacity of 570 litres and 1,700 litres when the rear seats are folded down, making it larger than competitors' such as that of the Audi A6 Avant e-tron. The back portion of the floor can also be lifted to access some additional storage. This car combines performance and practicality.

3. Volkswagen ID.7 Tourer

The Euro NCAP 5-star safety rated  ID.7 Tourer is rear-wheel-drive with a choice of batteries, but you can also get a 4-wheel-drive GTX variant with a dual-motor setup. Providing 605 litres of boot capacity, (or 1,714 litres with the rear seats down), you get more space than you do in some of the more expensive similar Audi and BMW models. If it's long distance comfort you're on the hunt for, then the heated massage seats should make an impression, alongside plenty of other design, tech and safety features including a 360-degree camera as standard. The ID.7 Tourer makes a good choice for busy families with lots of equipment to haul around.

4. MG5

Affordable and a great all-rounder, the MG5 boasts LED lights and a design-focused cabin including a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. With a 7 year warranty, it appeals to families looking for a flexible option that provides value for money. The boot size is competitive (but nothing outstanding) at 578 litres (minus the parcel shelf). It's WLTP range could be better, standing at 250 miles, however it’s enough to cover most people's daily commutes. There’s also vehicle to load capability; an added benefit allowing you to power external devices or appliances using its stored energy. While it doesn't wow in any particular area, the MG5 does everything it needs to do at an affordable enough price to deserve a place in our list.

5. Peugeot E-308 SW

Featuring a 154bhp front-mounted motor, the electric Peugeot E-308 SW is fairly cheap to lease and to run, with decent bootspace, practicality and looks. This plug-in hybrid version gives you 510 litres of boot space. Choose the 1.5 TSI eHybrid 204 and you’ll find it offers plenty of performance for most drivers.

7. Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo

With 4-wheel-drive as standard, this is a bit of a less practical choice but nevertheless still comes with a more than ample for most 446-litres of boot space (with an additional 84-litres under the bonnet). You can leverage more space with the seats folded increasing it to 1,212 litres. Instead of vast storage, you get  comfortable air suspension and great performance, fast charging and if you choose the optional Performance Plus Battery, an official range of 405 miles. The Taycan will suit those with a generous budget who want optimal levels of comfort, refined quality and ingenious suspension.
