The BYD Dolphin is a 5-door electric hatchback. It’s the most compact model in BYD’s European line-up and is a practical and affordable choice for drivers who would like an EV in the mid-class and mid-price range, offering real value for money in terms of tech and spec. It sits alongside the Atto 3 electric SUV and the Seal electric executive car in Chinese carmaker BYD’s line-up. With space for up to five occupants, this is a car that can be used as a company car, for individuals, or equally can be suited to small families.
Giving you a choice of 3 power outputs and two battery sizes, the cheapest versions called Active and Boost are powered by a 44.9kWh usable battery that offers an official range of 211 and 193 miles respectively. A bigger 60.5kWh battery version – fitted to Comfort and Design trim – extends the official range to 265 miles.
The front seats are heated and electrically adjustable and the range topping variants feature a large panoramic sunroof made of high strength acoustic and thermally insulated double layer glass. The Dolphin uses BYD's intelligent e-Platform 3.0, as well as the innovative 8-in-1 electric powertrain that integrates all essential components to ensure efficiency, optimal performance and a better driving experience. The electric motor drives the front wheels and delivers 150 kW (204 hp) and 290 Nm of torque. The driver can adjust the driving character to their liking using the4 driving modes – Sport, Normal, Economy and Snow.
Space is quite impressive, given the car’s compact footprint. There is good headroom and legroom. Though the boot isn’t huge at 345 litres, the luggage compartment can be expanded to 1,310 litres by folding the rear seats. In addition, the BYD Dolphin has more than twenty practical and flexible storage spaces. This would therefore work well as a car for individuals as well as families who don’t need to carry too much bulky equipment around.
