We’ve previously taken a look at the best hatchbacks, SUVs, and seven-seaters that are currently on the market. However, we know that not everyone is looking for a large car, in fact, we have a lot of customers looking for their next executive model. So to help drivers who want a new saloon we’ve rounded up our team’s best picks for 2023.

Best Saloon Cars of 2023

1. BMW 5 Series

BMW is a brand known for creating stylish and powerful models, so it won’t be surprising that it’s a BMW that took the top spot. We’ve opted for the BMW 5 Series which is one of the best saloons currently available on the market. It’s spacious, comfortable, got all the latest kit, plenty of luxury touches and on top of that is exciting to drive.

The 5 Series is larger than the popular 3 Series which means there will be more room for you and your passengers in the comfortable seats.

There’s a range of engines to choose from in petrol, diesel and even hybrid so you can find the best engine for your driving needs. This range is available across the trim levels, including the performance 5 Series M Sport. We’re expecting an i5, which is a fully electric version of the 5 Series to land later this year as well, for drivers who are looking for an electric saloon.

If you’d like to learn more about the variants available and the cost for each of them then you can take a look at our 5 Series leasing page

2. Volvo S90

Our next pick is the Volvo S90. It’s a large luxury saloon that offers drivers a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience.

It shares a lot of its underpinnings and interior features with the V90 estate and XC90 SUV giving it the same high-quality finish that feels distinctly Volvo. There’s a nine-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the centre of the dashboard that allows you to connect to your smartphone and control some of the vehicle features.

There is only one engine available, which is a 2-litre petrol hybrid. As a PHEV, the S90 offers you an electric-powered range of up to 54 miles on a single charge. Some might think that being a hybrid the S90 can’t achieve the performance that it did before, but that’s not true and the current model has a 0-62 mph acceleration of just 5.1 seconds.

You’ve got two trim levels to choose from; the R Design and the Inscription. The entry-level R Design is packed with equipment and features that really make it feel like a top spec car, including keyless start, heated front seats, parking sensors, rear-view camera and adaptive LED headlights.

Volvo is a brand known for its safety for decades, they even introduced the three-point seatbelt that is standard in all cars today, which is one of the reasons that they have been favoured by executives and families alike. Another is that their vehicles are spacious and comfortable for all of the passengers as well as the driver, and with the S90’s great handling and suspension it really is the full package.

3. Mercedes-Benz E Class

There’s no list of saloons that is complete without a Mercedes. We’ve opted for the Mercedes-Benz E Class as our pick, it’s a comfortable and stylish saloon that’s finished to a high quality.

You’ll have the choice of petrol, diesel and hybrid engines across the different trim levels. All of which will offer you great fuel economy, though company car drivers would be better with one of the hybrids as they’re plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) which have an electric range of around 30 miles which will give you one of the lowest BIK rates available.

Entry-level models include features like power-folding door mirrors, ambient lighting and safety aids like blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition and much more! These features don’t often come as standard and it’s touches like this that really highlight the high standard of Mercedes. Additionally, when you upgrade to higher specs you’ll get even more with options like adaptive LED headlights, gesture controlled powered boot lid and lane-changing assistance to name a few.

If you’re looking for a car with great fuel economy, a powerful engine and lots of premium touches then look no further.

4. Tesla Model 3

Tesla is an electric car company that is known for creating premium high-performance electric vehicles (EVs). When they first came on the scene they revolutionised EVs with their long ranges, rapid acceleration and modern designs and these three criteria remain present in their cars 15 years later.

The Model 3 is a sleek and stylish saloon inside and out. Tesla have given it a very minimal interior with all controls managed through the central 15-inch touchscreen, which means there’s no buttons cluttering up your dash.

There are three spec levels available and you’ll be able to choose from the RWD, Long Range and Performance. For drivers who want the most powerful car the Performance will be the right option with its rapid 0-60 mph of just 3.1 seconds and for those who want the maximum range of 374 miles then the Long Range will be best.

5. Alfa Romeo Giulia

In the final spot, we’ve put the Alfa Romeo Giulia.  It’s a fantastic looking car that is engaging and exciting to drive while still being practical for everyday use.

This saloon rivals the likes of the Jaguar XE in terms of premium finish and performance. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less practical than our other picks. In fact, it’s got plenty of space and comfortable seats for rear passengers as well as a large boot that offers 480 litres of storage.

Alfa Romeo is only offering the Giulia as a petrol car but there are two engines for you to choose from on the standard Giulia, both are 2-litre petrol with one offering 197 bhp and the other 276 bhp. For drivers who want even more power then the Giulia Quadrifoglio is available.

If enjoying the drive is a priority for you then the Giulia is an excellent choice, and we’ve got a range of fantastic leasing deals to make it even better.
