If you're looking for a step up in fuel efficiency but not quite ready to fully embrace electric yet, a self-charging hybrid could be your next best move. While not quite as economical as plug-in hybrids, self-charging hybrids do have the benefit of toping up their batteries while the vehicle uses its brakes or is on the move, making them more fuel efficient than non-hybrid models but not generally as costly as plug-in hybrid or electric vehicles.
So which are the best self-charging hybrids we've got on lease at the moment?
1. Toyota Yaris
One of the most efficient and economical small cars on the market right now, the Yaris Hybrid achieves brilliant economy through a combination of its low weight and efficient 1.5-litre hybrid engine, resulting in an official 69mpg combined with up to 80mpg possible according to Toyota, around town alone. Offering not only great value for money but excellent safety and practicality for a small hatchback, the Yaris Hybrid is hard to beat if sourcing an affordable runaround is your main priority.

2. Clio E-TECH
The Renault Clio Hybrid is another really economical little car. With a decidedly smart interior for its class, the Clio comes with a generous amount of standard equipment and a practical boot. With official fuel economy figures of 67.3mpg for the E-Tech hybrid, low running and taxation costs, it’s easy to see why the Clio features among our best value hybrids on lease at the moment.

3. Honda Jazz
Affordable to purchase and cheap to run, if you can set preconceptions aside. The Honda Jazz steers itself firmly into our top 5 most economical hybrid list on the back of its promise to deliver 63mpg according to Honda. Not only is it practical and fuel efficient, it’s also surprisingly comfortable with more cabin space than you might expect.

4. Toyota Corolla
The Toyota Corolla is a step up in size from the Yaris, yet still manages to offer 62.7mpg, which is why we’ve included it in our list. If you’re looking for a family car or one with room to transport more people comfortably, the Corolla could be just what you’re looking for. One of the best-selling cars in the world, not only does it offer great efficiency and comfort, it's well-made and well equipped for a car of its type.

5. Lexus UX
Our list wouldn’t be complete without including a larger premium family SUV so if you need a car that still offers executive looks and plush styling but is practical away from the office too, then this could be the car for you.
While it’s never going to be as efficient as the smaller cars on our list, the version that’s best for fuel economy, the Lexus UX 250h is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine that’s mated to an electric motor (or 2 if you opt for the E-Four trim level), achieving a claimed 53mpg. Driving around town will give you the most economy benefits from the hybrid system.
