Sales of EVs are rocketing as more and more drivers get on the road to Net Zero. But which models are standing out in 2024?

1. Tesla Model 3

Tesla_Model_3

One of the UK’s most popular electric cars, this one tops our list as the best car for all-round ability. As one of Tesla’s smallest and most affordable vehicles, it benefits from the same great technology and driver assistance features as its more expensive cars. The Model 3 has also had a facelift in 2024, including a sharper design and technology updates.

Lots of fun and engagement can be had in most driving situations and it gives a rapid 0-60mph sprint of 4.4sec, which is pretty unbeatable for its pricepoint. Range for its entry level specification is now 344 miles and the long-range model comes with 391 miles.

2. Porsche Taycan

With one of the longest ranges of any EV on sale, this sporty four-door electric car can officially cover up to 422 miles between charges, depending on which model you go for. With the addition of a Turbo GT, the maximum power increases to an incredible 1093bhp!

The 4S has a 282-mile range, plus a 0-60mph time of four seconds, making this a great choice for the majority of drivers. If you need more space there is the Sport Turismo model, with added practicality provided through its estate-like rear. There really isn’t much not to like about the Porsche Taycan if it’s in your price range.

3. MG4

MG4

If you’re looking for one of the cheapest EVs that still provides great value for money, its hard to beat the MG4 which is good to drive and comes with generous kit for a car of its price. Based on a scalable EV platform, with a line-up that includes Standard, Long and Extended Range versions, the latter can travel up to a claimed 323 miles from a charge too.

Loaded with equipment, this is a really good electric car providing amazing value.

4. Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The Ioniq 5 N is an electric car that does a great impression of a petrol car, so if you’re not looking forward to the driving transition to electric and want a smooth journey, look no further. A 641bhp electric hot hatch/crossover, it is both sensibly priced and practical, making it a great choice for those who need a larger electric car that is still stylish and fun. It feels more luxurious than most standard cars and for mixed driving, you can expect a range of around 221-230 miles.

With charge power 11 kW AC the Hyundai 5 N will take approximately 8 hours 45 minutes to charge, while with a rapid charger, charge time (24->192 mi) can be achieved in around 17 minutes.

5. Cupra Born

If style is important to you, look no further. The Cupra Born offers an immense sense of style to the driver looking for a spacious family hatchback.  It’s a great drive, both around town and on the motorway. Most importantly, you get good range, particularly on the big battery version. It’s also very efficient, which will help keep your electricity bills down.

6. BMW i4

The electric cousin of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, the BMW i4 gran coupe brings great performance and excellent infotainment in the form of a compact yet plush executive car.

With 5 seats and boot space for approximately 3 suitcases, it could be used as a small family car but there are choices in our list more suited to the practicalities of family life. This is a great choice, however, as a business vehicle. A battery range of 299 - 366 miles, makes it a practical choice on the roads. The entry-level eDrive35 has 282hp and claims up to 299 miles of range, while the eDrive40 ups this to 366 miles courtesy of a larger battery.

7. Volvo EX30

One of the best in terms of value for money within the premium range, the Volvo EX30 is a small electric SUV. It’s a great drive as well as being well built, well kitted-out and practical, with the ability to drive up to 295 miles on a single charge. The Volvo EX30 is a great option for a small family who want a premium brand electric vehicle without the premium price tag, since it can comfortably seat five people alongside cargo and is surprisingly affordable compared to others offering the same level of size, practicality and quality.

8. Kia EV9

If it’s an electric car with 7 seats you need then this is likely to be one of your top contenders. Practical, with enough space for adults in all three rows, should you need it, the Kia EV9 has similar dimensions to a Range Rover, but all the space is put to exceptionally good use with a wide array of possible seating configurations.

Not only is it versatile, the Kia EV9 boasts a huge 100kWh battery allowing a claimed 349-mile range and its ultra-rapid charging capability means you shouldn’t be stopped for long waiting for the battery to charge.

9. VW ID.7

The space, comfort, range and efficiency of this family car, make it a great hit, as Volkswagen’s first electric saloon (which also comes as an estate). It drives brilliantly and has 532 litres of boot space and limo-like rear space. It really is a car in which the whole family will be comfortable. A great choice for drivers looking to drive longer distances, it has ample legroom and headroom.

Officially the VW ID.7 will manage 386 miles of range on a full charge of its 77kWh battery. Long Range cars are equipped with an 86kWh battery that offers a range surpassing 400 miles. Given a sufficiently powerful DC charger, the ID.7 can achieve a 10-80% charge in 28 minutes. Home charging will take closer to 11 hours from a 7.4kW supply, 0-100%.

10. Fiat 500

Chic, with a decent level of equipment, the electric Fiat 500 is perfect for driving around town if you want a compact car and don’t need loads of bootspace. Two battery sizes are offered, with 115 miles of WLTP range in the smaller-celled Action and 199 miles in the bigger-battery version. With good handling and performance, it also looks great and houses plenty enough tech to keep the average driver happy.
